Ideas for December and January from Responsive Classroom

Staff,

The following article is one the elementary principal team has discussed with some really good Responsive Classroom strategies worth revising this time of year. Most elementary principals have also decided to share it with their buildings.

A reminder that tomorrow is your Day 6 to finalize your baseline assessment planning and to plan out how you'll utilize your first two Day 6s after winter break:  January 4th and 12th. SMART Team representatives will be sharing these plans on Tuesday at our December SMART Team meeting.

Keep Learning Going

During Holiday & Vacation Times

windom164Suddenly, it seems like the class is falling apart. Classroom routines that were going smoothly just a few weeks ago now seem rough around the edges. More and more children are forgetting to follow classroom rules. The noise level is higher, and academic productivity seems lower. What’s going on?
In the weeks leading up to winter vacation, what you’re seeing may well be a case of the holiday season jitters. From November through January, children often become more fidgety, giggly, testy, and tired. There are many reasons: they may be distracted by the excitement of home activities, or they may be reacting to increased stress at home. At school, schedules are often disrupted at this time of year by assemblies, plays, and special events, and such changes in routine can throw children’s behavior off. Plus, at many schools, recess is curtailed once winter weather arrives.
What can you do to help your students stay on track and learn at their best during this season? We’ve found that an extra measure of calmness, consistency, and structure can work wonders. Here are some strategies you might want to try.

Stick to Routines

As much as you can, stick to the routines that you’ve established to shape the school day. For instance, if a daily Morning Meeting is part of your routine, you may find it’s even more helpful now. Starting off each day with Morning Meeting helps students make the transition to school through a welcoming experience that reinforces expectations for behavior and builds enthusiasm for the learning day ahead.
You can use each of the four components of Morning Meeting strategically to help get the school day off to a good start. For instance, choose a calm greeting (such as a simple “Hello” passed around the circle) to settle the group if they seem especially bouncy coming in the door. Or use seasonally-themed sharing topics to help students learn more about each other. Choose sharing questions that every student in your class can answer comfortably. For example, questions such as What do you especially love about winter? or Do you enjoy any special holiday foods? don’t exclude children who don’t have vacation plans or who don’t celebrate holidays at home.
For more on how to plan Morning Meetings that will help with classroom management at this time of year, see Mike Anderson’s “Handling the Holidays” series from December 2009 on the Responsive blog.
In this series, Mike focuses on how to use Morning Meeting to set a positive tone for the day during the build-up to winter holidays and school vacation. He writes about the four components of Morning Meeting in order: GreetingSharingGroup Activity, and Morning Message.
When the inevitable deviations in routine do come up, let the children know in advance what to expect and reassure them that things will get back to normal. Remember that students learn by observing you: by handling schedule changes with good-natured calm and flexibility, you model that behavior for students.

Notice and Reinforce Success

Look for opportunities to remark on children’s success in meeting classroom expectations. By giving children genuine information about their competence, you can prevent many behavior problems.
A few tips for noticing positive behavior and using reinforcing language effectively:
  • Commend behavior you’ve actually seen, not behavior you hope to see. Saying, “Thank you for waiting for your turn to speak” sends a confusing message to a group that’s busy interrupting each other. Instead, try a direct reminder: “Everyone, remember that we’ve agreed to wait our turn before speaking.”
  • Be specific, describing the behavior you want to commend in detail and explaining why it’s helpful. For instance, “I saw classmates helping each other wipe off tables after snack. That really fits our classroom rule that says ‘Take care of each other.'”
  • Use positive words that do not single out any one child. For instance, “Lots of people lined up quickly today and waited quietly with hands and bodies under control. That gives us more time on the playground!”

Revisit Hopes, Dreams, and Classroom Rules

Any time children are going off track is a good time to review behavioral expectations. When planning such reviews, it’s tempting to think about what the children “should” be able to do by now (It’s December—they should know how to sit quietly for sharing!). But it’s much more productive to keep your focus on what the children can do right now and what they need from you to help them do better.
Many teachers devote time around winter vacation to having students revisit the hopes and goals they chose for themselves at the beginning of the school year. Teachers guide students in considering how they’ve progressed on achieving their goals. Should they make adjustments? Is it time to choose a new goal? (If your students didn’t name personal learning goals at the beginning of the year, it’s not too late to do so. This season, with its focus on fresh starts and resolutions, provides a natural opportunity.)
The Responsive Classroom approach to creating classroom rules is grounded in the idea that classroom rules help everyone meet their learning goals. So, after students revisit their personal goals, the next step is to reflect on the rules. Are they working? Do they need any changes? You might have the children rate how they’ve been doing with rule-following lately and then share your own observations. Be sure to acknowledge that it’s okay to need a brush-up; we all forget the rules sometimes, especially when we’re stressed or excited.
For more ideas and resources on this topic, see Margaret Wilson’s “Revisiting Hopes and Dreams in the New Year.

Keep Expectations High but Appropriate

Appreciate the extra energy your students may have during holidays or other exciting times and anticipate that they’ll need to expend some of that energy. Although students will benefit from periods of calm, it’s unrealistic to expect them to be quiet for long periods. Working in some talk and movement throughout the day helps children stay calm enough to learn. Some ideas:
  • Plan for partner chats or “turn and talk” periods.
  • Alternate active periods, such as science time, with more quiet periods, such as reading or writing.
  • Weave in energizers to give children breaks without getting them too revved up. For example, you could play “Mirrors,” where students silently mirror or copy your movements, or sing a peaceful song together, gradually removing words so that everyone is quietly humming by the end.

Read Aloud

Engaging read-alouds can really help children focus and calm themselves. Look for extra opportunities to read aloud, just for a few minutes. Vary your selections among picture books, chapter books, and nonfiction books. Read from joke, riddle, and poetry books when you have an extra moment in the circle or while the children are lining up.
Gauge the children’s energy level before choosing a reading. Choose a beautiful picture book or a quiet but moving story for times when you want to create a more calm atmosphere. Select stories that are especially inspiring, thought-provoking, or suspenseful if the class feels scattered and you want to bring them back together.

Keep the Learning Going

It’s natural for children’s behavior to veer a bit off track during exciting or stressful times. During such times, observe your students, hold them firmly but kindly to classroom expectations, and make a few simple adjustments in your teaching practice. You can keep learning going while helping the children meet the challenges or enjoy the fun of the season.

Staff Meeting and Day 6 Before Winter Break

Staff,

Thanks for the productive work with your PLCs on Thursday developing your essential learning and baseline assessment for the second trimester. Monday, December 19th will be your last Day 6 prior to winter break. Please plan for whatever your next steps are for finalizing your baseline aasessment, scheduling when you'll give it or analyzing your results if you've given the assessment.

On Tuesday at our staff meeting, we will start with a tech tip from Kelli, and then we will spend the vast majority enjoying each other's company through playing a special version of Yahtzee. If you have a dice shaker please bring it to the staff meeting. To prepare you for fun, here's a website for you to review how to play.  Yahtzee Tips

Sunday, December 4, 2016

Staff,

This week we have a couple times set aside for collaboration. Our late start on Thursday (8:05-10:00am) is mostly building based at North Hudson. Here is the link to the locations where teams will be meeting:  Late Start Schedule. Teams will be working deciding on their second trimester essential learning utilizing the grade level literacy curriculum map while recording their planning on the document we've been utilizing since the beginning of the school year:  PLC Planning. Also teams will be deciding on a common assessment to be used with their essential learning.

Our second day for progress monitoring this year is Friday. It will be our traditional 45 minute time frame during grade level's common planning time, and the location will be in Kara Lindstrom's classroom. Please double check that you have all your students updated instructional reading levels in Skyward because we will be utilizing this data during our roll through.

Tuesday's Staff Meeting

Staff,

I hope you all have a nice Thanksgiving Break and you were able to pause and reflect on the things you're thankful for in your life.

Tomorrow at our staff meeting, we'll start with a little time to pause for thanks. Don't worry there is nothing you need to prepare for regarding this. Next, teams will reflect on their first trimester essential learning: (NH PLC Products):   what went well, what will be your next steps for your students who haven't mastered your first trimester essential learning and how you'll utilize this process more effectively for second trimester:  here's the reflection document we will work from.

Finally as grade level and SPED teachers, we'll  discuss our Tier I Guarantees in the area of Reader's Workshop, looking for areas we're doing well and some areas of improvement classroom teachers and special educators can collaborate around.

Common Formative Assessments

Teams:

Many of you are wrapping up your first trimester essential learning along with your common assessments to identify if your students have mastered the essential learning you planned for them. Here is a link to an article on common formative assessments you may find helpful.

Also a reminder that we have our first building forum of the year at 8:05am tomorrow in the media center. I have attached the board approved calendar for 17-18, in case you have questions about it for district administration.

Second Assessment Window and EE Surveys

Staff,

Surprisingly we've already entered into the beginning of the second assessment window which runs from November 7th thru December 2nd. Here is the assessment calendar for your reference. This is a formal benchmark assessment window utilizing Fountas and Pinnell. At the bottom of the assessment calendar, it references how much sub time grade level teachers have available for formal assessments. However, remember you can spread out your benchmark assessments during this window to complete them within your ELA block, if you prefer this method instead.

For year two continuing and probationary teachers, by the end of November you'll need to have students/clients complete your survey and submit the survey growth plan by Wednesday, November 30th.

Finally a few reminders of upcoming events. We have our 4-5 concert dress rehearsal for the school this Thursday at 2:45pm. Also on Monday, November 21st there's a district forum in our media center starting at 8:05am. Then on Tuesday, November 22nd remember Turkey Bingo is at 2:45pm. Classroom teachers make sure to have your bingo boards ready!

SLOs, Staff Meeting and All School Meeting

Certified Staff,

As you submit your professional goal setting plan, I have set aside the next two Day 6s for SLO meetings (11/2 and 11/10). Teachers who are on cycle for evaluation this year, please set up a 15 minute meeting (through Sue) to review your professional goal setting plan. Classroom teachers, try to utilize the Day 6 common planning time above, and nonclassroom teachers you can schedule whenever we are both available over the next two weeks. Teachers not on cycle for evaluation, may choose to have your goal reviewed by me electronically without a face to face meeting.

Our Tuesday staff meeting will be held in the 118 computer lab. Kelli will begin with some tech tips followed by staff completing the online PBIS Self Assessment Survey (SAS).  As a building, we've taken this survey in the past to get a pulse on where we are with our Tier I implementation. Tomorrow Chris will be sending you an email with the link to the survey and some reminders on how complete it. I'm setting staff meeting time aside, so you won't have to complete it on your own time. Please log into a computer at the beginning of the staff meeting so you'll be ready to take the survey after Kelli is done.

Finally on Friday we'll have our November All School Meeting at 2:50pm. Dr. Zach McCabe, who's involved with the Chiropractic Society of Wisconsin, will be speaking to our students for about 15-20 minutes regarding proper posture while using backpacks and tech devices. This is in conjunction with the second annual Chiro-Kids Day which was October 27th.

October 24th

NH Certified Staff and Elementary LMS,

I hope you had a well deserved and restful day off on Friday after the completion of your conferences. Below I have linked resources which may be helpful as you work through creating your SLOs for the 2016-2017 school year.

The first document is the same one I shared last week. It is a step by step guide, personalized by our district, to assist you in completing your SLO and PPG. It references the revised mylearningplan documents for this year:  SLO Goal Setting and Review. Embedded in this document is also the a DPI document walking you through the SLO process DPI's Student/School Learning Objectives Guidebook.

The last couple of years building principals have also provided a sample SLO to support your work. Again this year, many of you may want to focus your efforts around the content area of reading to align your work with our PLC and SMARTgoal actions. Here's a link to this Sample Reading SLO.

The last link is the Google presentation I will be working from during our staff meeting from 8:05-9:00 in the media center October 24th PD for those of you who want to preview it or come back to it later. Prior to the meeting, please pull up on your computer (or print a hard copy) both your professional goal setting plan and review (from 15-16) so you don't have wireless issues accessing it later.

Finally 3rd-5th grade teachers, tomorrow during our roll throughs, we will begin with students you have concerns with socially or emotionally. Time will be set aside for each classroom teacher to spend five minutes discussing these concerns.

    Drills and Data

    Staff,

The weather on Monday looks wonderful, so be prepared for a fire drill around 9:10am, after first grade leaves on their field trip. This will fulfill our October requirement.

Today the assessment window was finalized in Skyward allowing you to begin to import your instructional reading level updates through the end of the school day on Friday, October 14th. For the 16-17 school year, below is a screen shot showing what the test score headings will look like within Skyward. The October 12th window is actually listed as 09/01/2016

Here is the video link I sent out last year to assist you with importing your instructional reading data into Skyward. However remember the test score headings are different this year, as well as some of the deadlines for your data updates. Here is also the assessment calendar for your reference. This data will be used to assist us with our first round of progress monitoring, and your SLO development.

If you have already entered your data for October, you will need to re-enter the scores after Skyward has been updated.  Sue or I can assist in doing this for you.

    Sunday, October 2, 2016

    Staff,

During September we completed out PBIS kickoff reviewing above the line behaviors in all settings. This week we will begin utilizing minor communication forms to reteach minor behaviors. Please turn these forms into Jody so she can enter them into our SWIS database. A reminder to fill out an office discipline form when a student has received three reteaching forms in the month for the same behavior. On the news I will be showing our minor behavior form cool tool, and clipboards with minor forms will be set out by our PBIS posters.

At our staff meeting on Tuesday, we will be talking about your core instruction as it relates to PLC work and SLOS, supporting tier II intervention fidelity, the change in the SLO language for this year and our soon to be released school report card. Below I have inserted last year's SLO language (left) and this year's language (right) so you have time to process the changes before Tuesday. The first table is for teachers in mylearningplan and the second one is for specialists. On Friday we will have our second All School Meeting starting at 2:50pm.

    Sunday, September 25, 2016

    Staff,

As we wrap up the first month of school this week, it seems like a good time to revisit the pillars that drive our work:  why do we exit, what must we become, how will we behave to make it happen and what steps do we have to take to get there?

During the late start, I mentioned the SMARTgoal team's focus is to review PLC teams' products and set the plan for the next month. Remember to give your SMART team representative feedback, before Tuesday, on October products you feel your team should work on to move your PLC goals forward on what you want your students to learn, how will you know when they've learned it, what will you do when they already know it and what you will do if students have not learned it yet? You may want to look at the PLC process for some guidance on your next steps. Remember to add any products you want included for review at the Tuesday SMART Team meeting in the PLC Products table

Planning Essential Learning Lessons and Common Formative Assessments

    Teachers,

During the Day 6 on Monday your focus will be on lesson planning around the essential learning your team decided upon. The following link has the PLC process we're utilizing this year. You will be working on the teaching portion of the process tomorrow PLC Process. In the upper lefthand corner of the document is your norms/planning document where you can record your planning.

On Thursday there are three agenda items to be covered during our late start. First HR will review the 16-17 certified handbook from 8:05-8:35am, next I'll recap our 15-16 SMARTgoal results and our 16-17 goals/action plan. Finally from about 9-10, we will spend our time digging into common formatve assessments to support your work in ensuring students have learned your team's essential learning for trimester one.

    Sunday, September 11, 2016

    North Hudson Staff:

This week you will have five tickets each day to recognize above the line behavior in the kitchen and the lunchroom. Please remember your tickets when picking up your students to recognize their behavior. If you have time this week, please also stop into the lunchroom when students are eating to acknowledge their behavior.

Tomorrow I will be sharing an updated spreadsheet that Amanda McCarthy has created based off our PLC essential learning work. She's revised it so you'll always be able to see the column headings while creating your PLC products. She's also added a column to include what you will teach to ensure your children get to mastery of your essential learning. This lesson planning will be your Day 6 focus on September 19th followed by the September 22nd late start to finalize your common formative assessment for your team's essential learning.

    Monday, September 5, 2016

Getting to Know Your Students as Readers

    Teachers:

With less fall assessments this fall (no MAP at most grade levels and no PALS at second), I'd like you to use the time normally spent on these assessments to get to know your students as readers, first and foremost by listening to them read. Amanda McCarthy shared this wonderful blog on just this topic: Getting to Know Your Readers. Also spend time reviewing their spring F+P notes from last year's teacher, and you now can also pull up your class to review their MAP data from last spring. This can be done looking at your class report or your spring 16 to spring 17 growth projections report. You need to choose students rostered in the fall 16-17, but students tested spring 15-16.

Starting tomorrow you'll also have five tickets a day (20 this week) to recognize above the line behavior as we teach and reteach our expectations these first five weeks of school. Entering/exiting/lines and hallways are our focus areas for the rest of the week.  Wishing you all a wonderful second week of school. It was great to have the students and you all back last week!

    Welcome Back Schedule

    Shield_District_Horizontal_FullColor_RGB.png

    August 7th, 2016

    North Hudson Elementary Staff:

I hope you all have had a well deserved break during June and July. Can you believe we are back to August already?  Our kick off schedule order is a little different than past years. On Monday, August 29th we will begin with a breakfast at North Hudson (8:15am) followed by our building staff meeting at 9:00am. Tuesday at the Hudson High School is the district wide breakfast and welcome back with keynote speaker Todd Whitaker.

We have some new colleagues for the 2016-2017 school year that I'd like to introduce. Anissa Young was hired as the North Hudson and Houlton gifted and talented teacher.  Kate Johnson will be teaching art on Day 1 at North Hudson, and Amy Anderson will be our new speech therapist at North Hudson. Also Marcy Krier is returning to full time status, and will be at North Hudson everyday this fall. We are lucky to have Steve Schoenecker join the North Hudson team as a tech integration coach, as well as Dani Taplin as our new occupational therapist. Finally Melissa Hines will be full time this fall with most of her time spent supporting students in our intellectual disabilities-moderate program.
Doug and the custodians are almost ready to wax the hallways. If you are wondering about the status of the hallway outside your classroom, feel free to give Doug a call on his cellphone prior to coming in (715)-222-6442.

As a reminder, the Pepper Fest Parade is Saturday, August 20th, and it begins at 11:00am. Those of you planning on participating please be at NHE Door #1 by 10:30am. I will be driving my pickup truck (you may walk or ride in the back), and our theme this year is North Hudson Students Keep on Truckin’.

I have included as a link our building and district schedule during our in-service days  Welcome Back Schedule. I am hosting an all staff get together at my house (953 Florence Lane) on Wednesday, August 24th at 4:30pm. My wife Heather and I will provide a taco bar with all the fixings, lemonade and water. If you would like an additional beverage, feel free to bring your drink of choice. I thought having our social a week before you’re all officially back to work, will allow for a more relaxing time. Please RSVP to me if you’ll be able to attend.

Also on Wednesday, August 31st we will have our building SPED and Therapist scheduling meeting from 1:00-3:00pm.
    Sincerely,

    Dolf Schmidt
    North Hudson Principal

    Sunday, May 22, 2016

    Staff,

This week I'll begin summative and SLO meetings. Teachers who are on cycle for evaluation, I am combining these two meetings together. Teachers on cycle, once you've submitted your Professional Goal Setting Review (SLO) you can sign up for a summative/SLO meeting through Sue. Please sign up for a 1/2 hour block of time and schedule your summative at least one day after you submit your SlO. This will allow me time to review your SLO and submit your summative to you, so you have time to read it prior to our meeting.

Here are dates available for summative or SLO meetings:  May 23-27, May 31st-June 3 and June 6. Teachers not on cycle may choose to complete their self reflection of the SLO electronically with me or as a group if your goals and actions are similar.

Also on Monday I will be sending out directions for submitting classroom pictures for our end of year slide show at our last All School Meeting. Wishing you all a great last two weeks of school!

    Sunday, May 15, 2016

    Staff Appreciation Week

    Staff,

I wanted to remind you on Thursday, you'll have two staff appreciation activities acknowledging your work. The North Hudson PTO is providing staff with breakfast during your late start time at North Hudson in the media center and staff lounge. Immediately after school, elementary principals will be hosting their appreciation gathering at the Willow River Carbonies and appetizers will be provided.

Prior to or after your breakfast on Thursday, this time is set aside for you to begin work on your end of your SLO reflection and your PPG. Again the document you'll access in my learning plan is your professional goal setting view, and the three guiding prompts are as follows: End-of-Year Status of Goal, Evidence of Goal Completion and Lessons Learned. For those of you who don't have data yet, you can complete the first reflection box on the practices you've put in place and the impact they've had on your students and also your PPG (the last item). Here is a link to the video tutorial (also found within the EE tab of this blog) that can assist you in completing your end of year SLO review. End of Year SLO Tutorial

I have set aside your Day 6 on Wednesday to give you time to start filling our your pink and blue cards for class placement. 5th grade you can use this for middle school transition documents.

Your May 20th Day 6 is for importing your F+P data into Skyward and to continue to work on your SLO. Tuesday, May 24 I will start meeting with teams or individual teachers regarding their SLOs. Teachers on cycle, I will review both your summatives and end of year SLOS in the same meetings. Summative meetings will occur from May 25-27, May 31st-June 3 and June 6. Teachers not on cycle may choose to complete their self reflection of the SLO electronically with me.

Finally I have added one more tab to my blog. It is the information from Human Resources regarding Certified Staff Salary Components. You've received this information before, but I thought it would be helpful to be able to access it from my blog.

    Assessments

    Staff,

We are currently within the spring assessment window for both the MAP and F+P. Here's a link to the Assessment Schedule, at the bottom of the document is substitute time you have allocated for testing. The assessment window has been extended for F+P through May 20th.

There is no staff meeting this week because of your Day 6 which is again open to your most pressing instructional planning needs.

Finally, the May 5th late start is building based, and it is available to you to begin to organize your end of interview SLO review: reflecting on the end of year status of your goal, evidence of goal completion and lessons learned from this process. The Educator Effectiveness Resources Tab within this blog, also has a video support for completing your end of year SLO reflection.

Thursday Late Start and Tornado Drill

    North Hudson Staff,

A reminder on Thursday, prior to starting our late start staff development, we will be meeting at the high school to come together from 8:00-8:30am for breakfast and to celebrate moving forward with secondary space.

There will be some short comments by Dr. Oullette and after which we will return to North Hudson Elementary for about an hour worth of PD around Gmail and Google calendar. This PD will be rolled out at three separate sessions simultaneously depending on your proficiency level around Gmail and Google calendar:  novice, practitioner or master. Thank you Amanda McCarthy, Kelli Hedlund and Heather Mathews for leading these sessions. To get you ready for the 14th, you'll need to start forwarding your Outlook email to your new Gmail account. Your Gmail accounts have been activated and are currently available, if you would like to begin using it.

To get started with Gmail now, use these directions to forward your Outlook 365 messages to Gmail.  Please forward your Outlook email and begin using Gmail prior to our late start on Thursday, April 14. You may also want to delete emails (or outdated email folders) out of your Outlook 365 prior to forwarding your email messages to Gmail, so you won't have to delete unwanted emails later from this new account.

To provide you some front loading regarding the new email prior to the late start, Nancy Dressel has created this Youtube video located on the HSD Technology Integration Site. Gmail Video Tutorial. Also on this site are the leveled training resources in case you'd like to explore them prior to April 14th.

On the afternoon of April 14th, Wisconsin will be conducting a state wide tornado drill. We will begin our mock watch at 1:00pm and our tornado warning drill at 1:45pm. Please review in your emergency folder the location your classroom goes to in case of a tornado. Here's a link to the Wisconsin Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week:  April 11-15.

Tuesday Math Staff Meeting and Day 6 Collaboration

    Staff,

At our staff meeting this Tuesday: Amanda, Jen, Paula and I will provide an overview of the updates on the Everyday Math Curriculum we received from Barb the consultant. Classroom teachers, please bring a device, your EDM Online log in information and any math materials you may want to plan with because there may be time at the end of the staff meeting to do some of this. Below is the presentation we'll be using, in case you want to preview it.

Also a reminder that on Thursday, Amanda will be holding a Documentation Log support session in the media center at 8:05am. For those of you who attend, this session will take the  place of your Day 6 Collaboration. Again as Amanda stated in an earlier email, the intention of this time is to discuss what things you could use for artifacts and what to add to the reflection. I will also also attend in case you have questions for me. Amanda is developing a support document to assist you with your artifacts and reflections. She'll be sharing out this document on Thursday.

Finally a reminder that the Forward Exam begins tomorrow for fourth grade students. They will be testing every day this week, for the majority of the day. Testing will occur in Mrs. Feyereisen's classroom, computer lab 118 and our SLD/EBD classrooms. Please assist in keeping the hallways quiet around these classrooms to provide the best learning environments we can for testing.
